Metal Roofing Sydney
Colorbond, Zincalume, and architectural standing-seam metal roof installation across Sydney. 20+ years experience, fully licensed, on-site quotes with no-pressure estimates.
Top Hat Roofing installs Colorbond®, Zincalume®, stainless steel, and architectural standing-seam metal roofing across every Sydney suburb. Whether you’re re-roofing a Federation home in Haberfield, building a new duplex in Parramatta, or specifying a coastal-grade roof for a Bondi beach house, we deliver a roof that’s engineered for Sydney’s climate and built to last 40–70 years.
Why Sydney Homeowners Choose Metal Roofing
Metal has overtaken tile as Sydney’s most-installed roofing material for good reason. It’s lightweight, storm-resilient, bushfire-compliant, and perfectly suited to the Australian climate. Every Colorbond profile we install is backed by a manufacturer warranty of up to 36 years on paint and corrosion.
- Durability: 40–70 year lifespan with minimal maintenance
- Lightweight: ~6 kg/m² vs 45 kg/m² for concrete tiles — gentler on older Sydney homes
- Storm-resilient: Interlocking panels shed Sydney’s intense summer downpours without leaks
- Bushfire-compliant: Non-combustible, suitable for BAL-FZ rated properties
- Solar-ready: Panels clip directly to standing seams — no roof penetrations required
- Energy efficient: Cool-roof Colorbond colours reduce ceiling temperatures by 3–6°C
Metal Roofing Profiles We Install
Colorbond® Steel
The Australian standard. Pre-painted steel available in 22 colours including cool-roof specifications. We install all major profiles — Trimdek, Kliplok 406, Custom Orb, Spandek, and Longline 305. Standard warranty coverage includes up to 36 years on paint and corrosion from BlueScope.
Colorbond® Ultra (Coastal Grade)
Mandatory within 1 km of breaking surf. We specify Colorbond Ultra on every coastal project from Manly to Cronulla, as well as harbourside properties in Rose Bay, Watsons Bay, and Vaucluse. Enhanced marine-grade coating prevents premature salt corrosion.
Zincalume®
Unpainted aluminium-zinc alloy steel. Popular for industrial, agricultural, and modernist architectural projects where a natural silver-grey finish is preferred. Extremely long-lasting when kept clean.
Architectural Standing Seam
Premium seamed panels with concealed fasteners, used on high-end residential and commercial projects. Sleek, contemporary appearance. We install Longline 305 and custom-folded VM Zinc where specified by architects.
Stainless Steel & Copper
For heritage restoration and architectural feature roofs. Stainless is occasionally used for coastal projects requiring 100+ year lifespans. Copper develops a natural patina over 10–15 years and is favoured on heritage properties in Woollahra, Mosman, and the Upper North Shore.
Our Installation Process
- On-site assessment. Alex personally inspects the existing structure, measures, photographs, and discusses options for your property — no cost, no obligation.
- Detailed written quote. Full breakdown of materials (profile, colour, gauge), labour, cleanup, scaffolding, and disposal — no surprises.
- Preparation & strip. Existing roofing is removed and disposed of responsibly. Timber battens, sarking, and structural members are inspected and replaced as needed.
- Anticon blanket & sarking. High-density anticon insulation (55 mm minimum) is rolled under the new roof, dramatically reducing rain noise and improving thermal performance.
- Panel installation. Panels are fixed according to manufacturer spec with cyclonic-rated fasteners where required. Flashings, ridge capping, and valley gutters are custom-folded on site.
- Gutter & downpipe alignment. Where included in scope, matching gutters and downpipes are installed with proper fall for efficient water discharge.
- Final inspection & cleanup. Site is swept for stray fixings (magnet pass), all debris removed, and photos provided to the homeowner.

- Written guarantee that your roof meets AS 1562.1 (Design & Installation of Metal Roofing)
Quoting Your Metal Roof
Every job is quoted individually based on your specific roof — size, pitch, complexity, material choice, coastal exposure, and any structural work identified during assessment. Standard Colorbond, coastal-grade Ultra, standing-seam, and architectural profiles all sit at different price points. We visit in person, measure, and provide a written quote with itemised scope.
Every quote is fixed-price in writing — if we find something during the strip that changes scope (rotten battens, asbestos underlay), we stop, document it, and get your approval before proceeding. No surprise invoices.
Areas We Serve
We install metal roofing across the entire Sydney metro area, with deep experience in the Inner West (Newtown, Marrickville, Leichhardt, Glebe), Eastern Suburbs (Bondi, Randwick, Coogee, Waverley), North Shore (Mosman, Lane Cove, Willoughby, Chatswood), Northern Beaches (Manly, Dee Why, Brookvale, Avalon), and the greater West (Parramatta, Ryde, Penrith, Castle Hill). Coastal and bushfire-exposed properties are our specialty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a metal roof last in Sydney?
A properly installed Colorbond roof in Sydney typically lasts 40–70 years. Coastal-grade (Ultra) installations near breaking surf can last 30–50 years before any repainting is needed. The steel itself outlives the paint system.
Is metal roofing noisy during Sydney rainstorms?
Modern metal roofs installed with anticon blanket insulation (55mm minimum) and batts in the ceiling are only marginally louder than tile during rain. The stereotype of 'rain on a tin roof' dates from uninsulated rural sheds — it's not representative of a proper residential install.
How much does metal roofing cost in Sydney?
Every job is quoted individually based on your specific roof — size, pitch, complexity, profile, colour, and any structural work identified during assessment. Coastal-grade Ultra is a premium over standard Colorbond. Request a quote for a written fixed-price number on your property.
Can I install metal roofing over my existing tile roof?
In most cases, no — we strip the existing roof first. Overlay installations create condensation problems, add weight to the structure, and complicate future repairs. On rare heritage projects where aesthetics demand it, we'll engineer a proper overlay solution.
Which Colorbond colour is best for Sydney?
For energy efficiency, the 'cool roof' colours — Surfmist, Shale Grey, Windspray, and Dune — reflect significantly more solar radiation and can reduce ceiling temperatures by 3–6°C in summer. Monument and Basalt remain the most popular for modern architectural projects. We'll bring colour swatches to your site visit.
Do I need coastal-grade roofing for my Sydney suburb?
If your property is within 1 km of breaking surf (Bondi, Coogee, Maroubra, Manly, Avalon, etc.) we specify Colorbond Ultra. Harbourside properties on deepwater inlets generally use standard Colorbond. We confirm the correct grade during the site assessment based on the BlueScope Environmental Classification for your address.
Is metal roofing bushfire-safe?
Yes. Colorbond and Zincalume are non-combustible and are specified on properties across all BAL ratings, including BAL-FZ (flame zone). Unlike tiles, which allow embers to lodge between them and reach underlay, properly installed metal roofing forms a continuous non-combustible barrier.
How long does a metal re-roof take?
A typical single-storey Sydney re-roof (150–250 m²) takes 5–8 working days from strip to cleanup, weather dependent. Double-storey or complex roofs with multiple pitches take 10–15 days. We roof-tarp every night so your home is weatherproof throughout.
Will a metal roof help with solar panels?
Yes. Standing-seam and Kliplok profiles allow solar mounting with clamp-on brackets — no roof penetrations, which eliminates the main leak risk with solar on tile. If you're planning solar within 5 years, metal is significantly better.
Do you remove old asbestos roofing?
We don't remove asbestos ourselves — it requires a licensed asbestos removalist. If your existing roof contains asbestos (common in Sydney homes built pre-1987), we'll coordinate with a licensed removalist and only begin our scope once a clearance certificate is issued. All of this is flagged in the initial assessment.
